Lyndhurst, OH

A former Lyndhurst police officer was sentenced Wednesday by Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Russo to three years of probation and was told he could never again serve as a police officer after being found guilty in an incident stemming from a May 19 car accident.

Robert Colombo, 40, and a 15-year veteran of the police force, reported that May day to an accident at Richmond and Anderson roads. The reporting officers found heroin in one of the cars and arrested two people.

According to Ryan Miday, spokesman for the Cuyahoga County prosecutor’s office, Colombo took the evidence to log into the evidence room, but never did. Instead, he replaced the heroin with rock salt.

The next day, Colombo overdosed on heroin at his Northfield Center home. Colombo pleaded guilty to drug possession and theft in office Dec. 21. He faced a possible maximum sentence of two years in prison.

Colombo, whom Lyndhurst Police Chief Rick Porrello described as “a very good officer,” resigned from the LPD in September.
