Warm Springs, OR
PORTLAND – A federal judge sentenced a former Warm Springs police detective Monday for stealing nearly $5,000 in cash evidence nearly three years ago.
Here’s a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office:
Gregory A. Stinson, 40, of Madras, was sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Ancer L. Haggerty to three months in prison for theft from an Indian Tribal organization.
Stinson was also ordered to serve a three-year term of supervised release, and to pay $4,989 to the Confederated Tribe of Warm Springs, from which he stole the money.
Stinson was a detective with the Warm Springs Police Department, where he worked for 13 years.
In April 2007, Stinson stole $4,989 that had been seized as evidence in a criminal case.
At the time, he supervised the evidence room, where monies and other evidence are maintained while in the custody of the police department.
The money had been removed from the evidence room and transferred to the Tribal prosecutor’s office for a court hearing, and returned to Stinson following the hearing. Instead of logging the funds back into evidence, Stinson took the money for his personal use.
Stinson later resigned from the Warm Springs Police Department.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Hannah Horsley prosecuted the case.
