The Sioux City Police Department’s new evidence storage system, which is similar to those used in physicians’ offices, will more than double the current capacity and provide at least 25 years of service.
The system will be approximately 35 feet long and 34 to 36 feet wide at its core, according to Jeff Paulsen, the department’s evidence clerk. After turning a crank, Paulsen will be able to walk down an aisle and access the evidence on shelving, which will be custom-ordered to fit the size of evidence boxes.
This summer, Paulsen, along with Zac Chwirka and three other identification technicians, will remove all of the evidence from the evidence property room and carry it upstairs to the former Woodbury County Communications Center. After the new shelving system is installed, the items will be moved back downstairs and refiled. The process will take about a month.
