KEMP – A member of Kaufman County’s law enforcement ranks has found himself on the other side of the bars.
According to Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Pat Laney, 34-year-old Damon Smith of the Kemp Police Department was arrested at 10:22 p.m. June 30 and charged with two counts of abuse of official capacity.
“Allegations against Mr. Smith include stealing property from the Kemp Police Department, where he was employed as a police officer for the last three years and exchanging the property for drugs,” Laney said. “Mr. Smith is also accused of providing known drug dealers in the Kaufman County area with ‘protection’ in exchange for methamphetamines that he in turn sold. Further charges are pending as Kaufman County Narcotics Investigators and the Texas Rangers continue their investigation.”
Smith, a Mabank resident, is being held in the Kaufman County Law Enforcement Center, where his bail is pending.
