A property clerk for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has been indicted by a grand jury for theft by a public servant, a state jail felony.

Merisa Jones Pickens, 42, was arrested Nov. 24 and charged with felony theft, said Deputy Rod Carroll, spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Court documents show Pickens received $1,100 as evidence on July 1 to hold in the property office. Her ex-boyfriend notified authorities that she kept the money and Pickens confessed after being confronted, according to court documents.

Pickens, a Beaumont resident, posted a $6,000 bond on the same day she was arrested, according to Carroll.

If convicted, Pickens could be sentenced to up to two years a in state jail.
