Galveston County, TX
GALVESTON (June 8, 2012) — Several pounds of old explosives that were discovered in the property room of a Southeast Texas sheriff’s department have been safely detonated.
Galveston County sheriff’s Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said a weapons team destroyed the ordinance Thursday night.
The items included plastic explosives, pyrotechnics, black powder and detonation cord.
Tuttoilmondo said Friday that the items may have been 30 or 40 years old and probably were not tied to a criminal case.
He said sometimes residents find explosives and turn them in to the sheriff’s department.
Sheriff’s officials were going through some old cabinets on Thursday afternoon when they found the explosives.
Ordinance experts took the items to an isolated part of Pelican Island for destruction.
