Dothan, AL

Former Airport Police Chief Tony Walker pleaded no contest Monday to grand theft, two counts of dealing in stolen property and tampering with evidence for stealing and selling guns from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office’s evidence room.

Chief Assistant State Attorney Greg Wilson told Circuit Judge Michael Overstreet that Walker, 44, while working as a deputy filled out paperwork in 2006 showing that 20 guns that were no longer evidence in pending cases had been destroyed in accordance with state law.

But Walker had taken those weapons and sold them to individuals and pawn shops in the area.

When questioned in 2012 about these accusations, Walker hid one of the firearms to prevent investigators from finding it.

Overstreet sentenced Walker to five years probation. Walker also had to surrender his law enforcement certification and will never work as a law enforcement officer again.

The plea agreement left adjudication up to the judge and Overstreet did not adjudicate Walker guilty of the felony charges based on Walker’s lack of a criminal record and the surrender of his law enforcement certification.
