Cottage Grove, OR

Former Cottage Grove police officer Phil Beach is being investigated for possible criminal charges by the FBI for violation of department policy regarding the handling of evidence, the Cottage Grove Police Department said in a press release Friday.

Beach was suspended on June 11 after Cottage Grove police Interim Chief Scott Shepherd was notified of the possible violation on May 27 and investigated it, the release said.

Beach was fired July 15 for department policy violations, according to the release, which was prepared by Shepherd.

Oregon State Police agreed to investigate the case at Shepherd’s request and determined there were possible criminal charges. OSP forwarded the case to the Lane County District Attorney’s office for prosecution on July 23.

The case has been transferred to the U.S. attorney’s office and the FBI for investigation and prosecution.
