Two Livingston Parish Detention Center trusties were arrested Thursday on theft, weapons and drug counts in the theft of various items from the Denham Springs Police Department’s found property room.

Inmates James Hood, 27, 28224 Frank Ballard Road, Holden, and William Scott, 32, 14722 Forest Grove, Baton Rouge, had been assigned to the Denham Springs Police to help with post-flood repairs to the building, Chief J. Shannon Womack said in a news release Friday morning. 

The two men gained entrance to a flood-damaged area where found property is stored and took prescription medication from inside an unclaimed purse that had been stored there since 2006, Womack said. The pair also took an apparent counterfeit bill.A search of the men recovered a spoon, screwdriver, razor blades and medication packaged for smuggling. 

The men were booked on multiple counts including theft, illegal carrying of weapons, drug possession with the intent to distribute, tampering with evidence and introduction of contraband into a penal institution, Womack said.”We are pleased to have recovered this contraband before it made its way into the prison,” Womack said.The investigation remains ongoing.
