ST. JOSEPH — A former police officer who pocketed drugs from the scene of a fatal overdose told a Berrien County judge Tuesday that he has shamed himself and done great harm to his family his community.

“I hope they will see that I’m going to try to do my best with what I’ve got. I’ve lived a life of service to my community, people and God, and I let them all down. I’m very ashamed,” Kraig Mitchell, 33, told Judge Donna Howard before being sentenced by her.

“It’s a sad day for you and for your family,” the judge told Mitchell. “Sometimes we take things for granted and I think that’s what you did. You were on a good path. Now you’ll be on a different path because of your mistake. You walked around every day and enforced the law. You knew the law. You knew all those things.”
