CAMPBELL, Ohio –
The Police Chief for the City of Campbell has resigned after an investigation was launched against him.
Police Chief Dennis Puskarcik turned in his letter of resignation to the city on Monday.
Puskarcik’s letter says “after being exonerated of any wrongdoing within the City of Campbell Police Department” he resigned.
An attached email from Lieutenant Kevin Sferra says that a thorough investigation found that the evidence room integrity was not compromised.
City officials previously said that the allegation against the chief is that he allegedly removed evidence from the evidence locker room. While Macala will not specify what was allegedly taken he did state that it was not illegal drug, firearms or from a recent investigation.
Sferra originally said if there was evidence to suggest wrongdoing then the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) will be taking control of the case.
Last week, City Law Director Brian Macala told 21 News that following the internal investigation they decided to hand the case over to the state’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations.
21 News has reached out to BCI who says they do not currently have an open investigation against Puskarcik.
Sferra said in the letter to the mayor that no criminal activity was found, only “policy infractions” in the handling “recent evidence”.
January 16th would have been the two-year anniversary of when Puskarcik was sworn into the job.
Mayor Nick Phillips said Puskarcik was not asked to resign but did so of his own choosing.
