— The Hamilton Police Department is working to determine where a gravestone apparently meant to recognize the final resting place of a World War I veteran is supposed to be.
Sgt. Richard Burkhardt said the gravestone belonging to Elick Maynard was found on the west side of town in an alley and brought to the department’s property room last month. Maynard, who also went by Alexander, was born in 1881 and passed away in 1949. He is believed to be buried in Ohio under the name of Alexander.
The public responded to the department’s Facebook posting on June 2 with varying claims as to who Maynard was, where he was from, and any possible descendants.
Burkhardt plans to call the Ridge Hill Memorial Park near Cleveland, where Maynard’s son is believed to be buried.
